Echoes of Ancient Sorrows – 2019

Echoes come to us from a space beyond and reminds us moments in the past.

Initially titled ‘Laboratory of Perverse Laws’ this show is the culmination of conceptual and material experimentation in my ongoing sampling and misreading of N.P van Wyk Louw’s poem-epic ‘Raka’.

The exhibition consists of chalk drawings and a series of framed experiments surrounding a large scale sculpture: “Echo Chamber”.

In Echo Chamber, a clear pentagonal tank holding 300l of water from Port Adelaide connects to three altar-like structures with tubes. On select days of the exhibition the water was brought to a boil, bringing about the decomposition of three carcasses cast in used motor-oil.

The chalk drawings and experiments serve as documentation of the misreadings and material experimentations of this show.
